Resetting your email mailbox password in cPanel

Reset an email mailbox password in cPanel in a few minutes, or let the mailbox owner do it themselves through webmail - and find out why updating every device straight away is critical.

Resetting an email mailbox password in cPanel takes only a few minutes. Follow the steps below to update your password and keep your account secure.

If you need to share password-reset instructions with a staff member who does not have cPanel or MyKualo access, see the Changing your password via webmail section at the bottom of this article.

Resetting your password in cPanel

Log in to cPanel

Go to www.yourdomain.com/cpanel in your browser and log in with your cPanel username and password, or log in via MyKualo.

For full login instructions, see how to log in to cPanel.

Navigate to Email Accounts

  1. On the cPanel home screen, find the Email section.
  2. Click Email Accounts to see a list of all mailboxes on your account.

Select the mailbox to update

  1. Browse the list of email accounts, or use the search box to find the one you need.
  2. Click Manage next to that account.

Set a new password

  1. On the account management page, scroll to the Password field.
  2. Enter a new password, or click Generate to let cPanel create a strong one for you.
  3. Check the password strength indicator - aim for a score marked as Strong or better.
  4. Click Update Email Settings to save the change.

A strong password is at least 12 characters long and mixes upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid common words and never reuse a password from another account.

Update your email client on every device

Once you save the new password, you must update it in every email client where that account is configured - your phone, tablet, laptop, and any other device - before those devices next try to connect. If a device attempts to connect with the old password, repeated failed login attempts can cause your IP address to be greylisted by the firewall. If that happens, every other device on the same internet connection will also lose access until the block clears. Do not skip this step.

Update the password in each email client as soon as you have saved the change in cPanel.

Changing your password via webmail

Mailbox users can update their own password directly through webmail, without needing access to cPanel or MyKualo. This is useful if you want to let a staff member reset their own password independently.

This method requires the user to know their current email password. If they have forgotten it, a cPanel account holder will need to reset it using the steps above.

  1. Log in to webmail. You can do this by going to www.yourdomain.com/webmail in a browser, or by following the instructions in Getting Started with Webmail.
  2. Once logged in to Roundcube, click your email address or the account menu in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the Settings panel, click Password in the left-hand menu.
  4. Enter your current password, then enter and confirm your new password.
  5. Click Save to apply the change.

After saving, the user must update the new password in every email client they use on other devices before those devices next try to connect. A device connecting with the old password can trigger repeated failed login attempts, which may cause the IP address to be greylisted by the firewall - blocking access for all devices on the same connection until the block clears.
