Use tags to track engagement
Label contacts by behaviour or interest in real time, and build segments and targeted campaigns around them.
Tags are labels you attach to contacts to classify them however you like - by behaviour, by interest, by where they are in their journey. Tagging updates a contact's profile in real time, so you can build segments and target campaigns around the actions people actually take. This guide covers creating and applying them.
Create a tag
- Go to Audience, then Tags.
- Open the menu and type your new tag's name.
- Click Create 1 tag.
Your tag is ready to use.
Tag a contact
- Go to Audience, then Contacts.
- Select your list.
- Tick the contact you want to tag.
- In the Actions menu at the bottom, choose Add or remove tags.
- Pick the tag (or create one here) and click Tag, then Done.
Tag during import
You can apply a tag while importing a list, which segments it automatically as it comes in. If you already have a segment built on a tag, choose it during import and every contact joins that segment. Importing from another tool? Include your tags in a column separated by commas, and they're created individually during import.
Troubleshooting
Tags don't show in the library - refresh after creating, check for duplicate names, and re-login if needed.
Can't add tags to contacts - make sure contacts are ticked, the tags exist first, and you have edit permission; try one at a time.
Tags don't import - put them in a dedicated CSV column, comma-separated, and check the mapping includes that column.
Can't create a tag - avoid special characters and overly long names, and check you haven't hit a tag limit.
Bulk tagging fails - reduce the number selected (try 500 or fewer), and make sure they're all active.
For dynamic, rule-based grouping, see Create segments.
