ICANN's Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy (IRTP) introduced a mandatory approval process for certain domain contact changes. This applies to generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .com and .net, but not to country-code domains such as .uk, .us, or .ca.

## What changed

When you update any of the following fields on a gTLD domain, an approval email is sent to both the old and new registrant contacts:

- First name
- Last name
- Organisation
- Email address

Both the old and new registrant must approve the change before it takes effect. If you are both the old and new registrant (for example, correcting a typo in your name), you will receive two separate approval emails and must approve both.

:::warning
You have **7 days** to approve the changes. If both parties do not approve within that window, the request is cancelled and no changes are made.
:::

Once both parties approve, confirmation emails are sent to both contacts. The domain is then **locked for 60 days** and cannot be transferred to a different registrar during that period.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does this affect domain transfers to or from Kualo?

Only if you change the registrant contact information as part of the transfer. If no contact details change, the standard transfer process applies.

### Which contact fields trigger the approval emails?

Changes to the first name, last name, organisation, or email address fields.

### Who must approve the changes?

Both the old registrant and the new registrant must approve.

### What if I am both the old and new registrant?

You must approve twice - once via each of the two approval emails sent to you.

### What happens if only one registrant approves?

The change is cancelled. Both the old and new registrant must approve for the change to take effect.

### How long do I have to approve?

7 days from when the request was submitted.

### What if I no longer have access to the old email address?

Open a support ticket with our team via your Kualo client area and we will assist you.

### What if I need to transfer the domain and change the contact details?

Perform the domain transfer **first**, then update the contact details once the transfer is complete. Changing contact details before the transfer will lock the domain for 60 days and prevent the transfer.

### Can I opt out of the 60-day lock?

Contact our support team via your Kualo client area to discuss your options.
